Prepare the Patties
- In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions and form loose balls without overworking the meat.
Cook the Patties
- Preheat the grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Place the beef balls on the grill and smash them down with a spatula to form patties.
- Cook for about 3-4 minutes until a crust forms, then flip and immediately place a slice of cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.
Assemble the Burgers
- Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster. Layer the bottom bun with lettuce, a cheeseburger patty, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.
