- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, and heavy cream.
- Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg to the mixture and combine well.
- In a separate skillet, sauté diced onion and minced garlic until softened.
- Stir in the chopped Swiss chard and cook until wilted.
- Layer the stale bread in a greased baking dish.
- Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread.
- Add the Swiss chard mixture and sprinkle half of the Gruyere cheese over the top.
- Continue layering with the remaining bread, egg mixture, and Gruyere cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until set and golden on top.
